Dear San Diego,
Here are the cross-cultural events we found for this week. Celebrations in the coming days include the House of Finland Lawn Program at the International Cottages on Saturday and the 34th Annual Kuumba Festival at Marie Widman Park (also on Saturday).
Music and dance concerts kicking off the weekend include Sonido De La Frontera at the California Center for the Arts, Metalachi at the Holding Company, and Zade Dirani at the Jacobs Music Center. Tomorrow (Saturday), you can hear the popular young singer LuMaya at the Bornemann Theatre in San Marcos and violinist Kishi Bashi at UCSD's Epstein Family Amphitheatre. Sunday, you can enjoy works by choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat, Ballet Arte, music by Indian composer and singer Ram Miriyala at Royal Banquet, or the Mongolian folk rock and heavy metal band The Hu at the Belly Up. On Tuesday, Reggae band Third World will perform at the Belly Up. Next Thursday, the Tango Elite show will be performed at the California Center for the Arts. And next Friday, the always fun Beatles vs. Stones show returns the Belly Up.
Talks around town include UCLA professor Ralina Joseph's talk at the Central Library on Racial Exhaustion on Saturday, and, next Thursday at the Remington Club, the World Affairs Council will host a talk by Bogdan Matuszynski on Human Security in the Middle East and South Asia.
Stage shows include Kim's Convenience at the Old Globe, Purpose at La Jolla Playhouse, The Sound of Music at the Civic Theatre, A Room at the Castle at the Moxie, Thinking Shakespeare at the Old Globe (Saturday only), The Hombres (also at the Old Globe, starting Saturday), and the Jewish Short Play Festival at the JCC on Monday.
Other notable events around town include the Montras exhibit at the Linda Vista Library (until July 15), the Ingrained Patterns exhibit at the Japanese Friendship Garden (runs through July 26), a Umeboshi Workshop on Saturday at the Japanese Friendship Garden, the San Diego Diplomacy Council Fundraiser (Global Connections to America’s Finest City) at the University Club on Wednesday, and next Friday's and Sunday's screening of the film Kanal at the Digital Gym.
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
